Hay fire closes Highway 41

By Mike Niedbalski

On Friday, January 27, deputies were called to assist with traffic control at the east junction of Highway 77 and Highway 41. Deputy Ben Hartman was dispatched at 6:22 p.m. and temporarily shut down both lanes of Highway 41.

Cortland Fire and Rescue received the original call at approximately 6:00 p.m. and responded to the location about one mile east of Highway 77 on Highway 41, where they observed a pickup on the side of the road towing a trailer filled with hay bales. The bales had caught fire.

Firefighters were able to use a car jack to detach the trailer, saving the truck. Adams Fire Dept. was also called in to bring more water. According to Cortland Fire’s dept. member Adam German, the driver of the trailer was not from the area and had just purchased the bales that day. The cause of the fire is unknown.

According to Gage County’s Chief Deputy Doug Klaus, Highway 41 was reopened at approximately 7:15 p.m.
