By Gerry Baksys

Three men were seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on Thursday, April 1 at 6:54 p.m.

According to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office, Vicky Benson, 48, of Sterling was driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan and stopped at the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 43. She began to turn east onto Highway 41 and did not see a 1988 Chevrolet K1500 pickup heading west on Highway 41.

The front right corner of Benson’s vehicle struck the right rear corner of the truck, causing the vehicle to spin and roll twice down the northwest embankment.

The truck’s driver, Verl Mulder, 72, of Firth, was taken to BryanLGH West listed under serious condition. The hospital had no records of him as of Tuesday, April 6. Paul Straube, 54, of Bennet, a passenger in the truck, was also taken to BryanLGH West listed under serious condition. The hospital had no record of him as of Tuesday. A second passenger, Larry Larkins, 66, of Firth, was taken to BryanLGH West under critical condition. He was listed as being in fair condition as of Tuesday.

Benson was not reported as having sustained any injuries. She was cited for alleged failure to yield the right of way.

Besides the Gage County Sheriff’s Office, Adams Fire and Rescue, Cortland Fire, Sterling Rescue and Clatonia Rescue responded to the accident.
