Bess Streeter Aldrich was one of the
few writers who could say that she sold every thing she ever wrote.
She was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, but moved
to Elmwood, Nebraska as a young bride and mother in 1909. It was in Plattsmouth that
she wrote her books, short stories and raised her children. She moved to
Lincoln in 1945.
In 1941, her novel, Miss Bishop, was
transformed into a film,
Cheers for Miss Bishop, starring Martha
Scott as the main character. In 1995, A Lantern in Her Hand
became a TV movie (teleplay by Earl Hamner, Jr. of The Waltons fame) called
A Mother's Gift.
Aldrich was inducted into the Nebraska Hall
of Fame in 1971-72.
